From 1960 to ………..2008, the year of the Olympic Games that shine in an ancient land running towards the third millennium.

With the signs of Olympia at our backs, De Coubertin’s secret dream meant to celebrate the immutable value of the man-athlete in a classical vision, marked by Rome at the end of the second millennium and Athens at the opening of the third one.

Tonight we are here to remember those qualities of the man-athlete that, in fifty years of marvelous dreams, wonderful achievements and terrible delusions, have marked and will continue to mark our lives.

Considered as symbols, in their lands for their birth and in the world for their podium, those men have in common a will that never withdraws and a sense of commitment that is able to reward even when the fair challenge and adversities seem to dominate them. On the podium they share the same silent glance towards the sky and a mute prey that make them more real and human in the highest moment of their glory.
